Dakar, Senegal - April 2005

Dakar, Senegal - April 2005 Awadi has never hidden his political and social convictions. He channels them into his music, denouncing Africa’s corruption, Western hypocrisy and the negative image of his Mother Continent. The rapper draws his inspirations from his home base, a cocoon where his friends and family keep his feet firmly on the ground.
We visit Awadi’s offices and studio which dominates an invisible border between a rich and tranquil Dakarois suburb and one of the city’s numerous ghettos. He has built a sophisticated studio where some of Senegal’s most talented new artists congregate to record and share their sounds. This is a tour of his small business enterprise which gives an idea of the judicious balance Awadi has struck between his own artistic career and parallel activities.

I met Didier Awadi in his home in Dakar. He has built a slick enterprise there that includes a studio on the rooftop. This interview was first broadcast by World Tracks, the weekly music programme on Radio France International in English.
